Denver says marijuana OK
In a symbolic move, the city of Denver, CO today voted to make the possession of one ounce or less of marijuana unpunishable by the law. The downside is, it’s still illegal in Colorado, and thus users will still be prosecuted. Here’s a question: if every city in CO voted to legalize marijuana one by one until it was legal in every city and town, would it still be legal in the state?
Naturally, the vote didn’t come easy. A hot button topic like pot doesn’t make it to the ballot without a little debate. Marijuana trumps alcahol?
The Denver proposal seemed to draw at least as much attention for supporters’ campaign tactics as it did for the question of legalizing the drug.
Tvert argued that legalizing marijuana would reduce consumption of alcohol, which he said leads to higher rates of car accidents, domestic and street violence and crime.
The group criticized Mayor John Hickenlooper for opposing the proposal, noting his ownership of a popular brewpub. It also said recent violent crimes - including the shootings of four people last weekend - as a reason to legalize marijuana to steer people away from alcohol use.
Of course, even if it was legalized in Colorado, we know what little good that would do. A precedent was set months ago that feds could still seize marijuana and prosecute possessors, even if it violates the state’s constitution, as it did in California.
UPDATE: Here’s an article about the 23 year old behind the Marijuana-beats-booze camapaign.

Finally, hopefully it will spread to GA1

yeah i second that, when will it be GA’s turn. actually, when will this “war on drugs” end

Well, it isn’t so much a “War on Drugs” as a “War on Marijuana.” I think the gov’t spent somewhat of like 98 million…or billion?…on advertising throughout 1999-2002? I can’t be quoted on the dates and figures, but it’s ludicrous to me why the government spends that much trying to kill it, which will never happen, when they could legalize it, tax it, and make back the money spent on this crazy conflict in Iraq.

about time someone had the guts to tell the gov’t and the nieve american people that marijuana is not as harmful as the “war on drugs” campaign makes it out to be. GO DENVER! soon the rest of the country should follow!

This is not the beginning of the mariujana revolution, the goverment will never allow the legalization of marijuana all over the country. The goverment see’s its self as the leader of all the others how would legalizing marijuana make them look to the rest of the world.

The time has finally come for the soccer-mom douche bags that run this country to stop being so scared, and let people enjoy themselves. Looks like it’ll be “Go Broncos” pretty soon for me.

the only way we can get this facade of a war on “drugs” is to vote out the tired old faction of people who are owend by the tobbaco industry

[...] A campaign to legalize marijuana in the state of Nevada has just begun. Of course, federal law will overule the state law, much like in the Denver case, but we’ll take symbolic victories. A campaign to legalize marijuana in Nevada begins Tuesday. The Committee to Regulate and Control Marijuana wants to make it legal for adults 21 and older to use marijuana in the privacy of their own homes. [...]

The things that make cannabis illegal are the lawyers, new jails being built, drug testing centers, drug rehab centers, that have turned illegal smoke into a money making industry. I vote to legalize cannibas for anyone over 21. But you know what?My vote will never be counted, because the democratic society we live in will never put it to a vote.

Alchoal is legal..and it has more effects on your body then weed does. The only damn reason it’s not legal is cause the goverment doesn’t want to lose money, cause people grow there own shit.

i think that the legalization should hapen in new york next. Nothing ever fuckin happens here and the only thing we do is smoke pot and drink. and i have the backup of my whole county!.

I think that smoking marijuana is way better than letting people drink , because at least you can drive with out a problem occuring.
April 25th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
I think the next state that needs to legilize pot is Minnesota

Milton Friedman spoke out for marijuana rights for the business side of it. The U.S. SPENDS approximately $7.7 billion a year just PROHIBITING it. Where in Canada the marijuana business grossed an estimated $7 billion in some kind of PROFIT. The U.S. is missing out on a whole $14.7 billion. I don’t drink one little bit of alcohol , but i’ll smoke up a storm. But anti-cannibus people in my life have no freaken clue about it. No clue at all. Now if i was a drunk…I’d be an alcoholic. If you’re hooked on man made crap like meth and crack then you’re a drug addict. If you’re hooked on marijuana…you’re just a pothead. Now this world is full of stereotypes. What do you see when you think of an “alcoholic”? What do you see when you think of a “druggy”? Now what do you see when you think of a “pothead”? What exactly does a pothead look like? Do we even have a stereotype for a pothead? Or is just someone with squinty eyes who’ll make you laugh your ass off? There…i put in my two cents!!!

If the majority of people want marijuana to be legal, it could be done. Think about it. The Government will have to succomb to what the people want at some point. People need to be more active and take part in the effort to legalize marijuana. Women managed to get rights, Other races now are equal after years of protesting and fighting for rights. We have to fight and demand for marijuana to be legal and it will eventually happen.

i think that pot keeps kids from doing the heavier drugs like meth. i live in nebraska and pot and meth are our biggest drugs here. we dont get much more. every now and then but mostly pot. i keeps kids relaxed. i bet at least one of our highschool teachers do it.
